Our Rare Books and Special Collections includes a wide-ranging variety of materials from across the world. Highlights include medieval manuscripts, unconventional artist books, early illustrated science and medical books, an expansive science fiction collection, and so much more.
These items illustrate centuries of cultural, religious, scientific and social change. They are used for teaching students across the University, and for research by both academics and external researchers.
We welcome donations of rare contemporary and historical items. Each donation is assessed on its ability to support education and research activities within the University.
For significant items or collections, the Australian Government’s Cultural Gifts Program offers tax incentives to encourage people to donate cultural items to Australian public collections. Donations made under the Cultural Gifts Program must exceed a value of AUD $10,000.
If you are interested in donating a rare book or collection to the University Library, please complete the expression of interest form.
The Manager, Rare Books and Special Collections will contact you to discuss your proposed donation.
