New ARTBOX display: Pink Sky at Night

ARTBOX display in Fisher Library, level 4

Pink Sky at Night

Across Fisher Library, three glass showcases feature work by emerging artists. ARTBOX gives artists the chance to show their work to new audiences and gain exhibiting experience, and gives visitors the chance to discover new makers and see how they work. Displays rotate throughout the year and feature artists across disciplines.

Visit ARTBOX on levels 4, 3  and 2 of Fisher Library.

About the exhibition

Pink sky at night, sailor’s delight
Pink sky in the morning, sailor’s warning.

Pink sky at night takes its title from the old sailors’ rhyme and follows what happens to the things we lose. It’s about objects cast adrift and washed back up – derelict bronzes, sea glass worn smooth, sunken silver, a teddy left behind on holiday. Nothing comes back unchanged. Like a translation, the meaning shifts but is never completely lost.

What we choose to throw away says something about us. In the curators’ words, these things “will always return, perhaps with more barnacles than before”.

Spread across three levels, the exhibition moves from the wind in a sail on level 4 down to the seafloor on level 1. The works span ceramics, blown glass, pewter casting, printmaking, textiles and rope.

The works were made on Boregal, Cammeraygal and Gadigal land by Imogen Kerr, Tiia Marsh, Johanna Rigg-Smith, Ruby Rigg-Smith and Phoebe Walker.
