For 2026, the University of Sydney has joined major sector‑wide Read and Publish agreements negotiated through the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) with Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, Wiley and Springer Nature. These agreements significantly expand open access publishing opportunities for University of Sydney researchers, with most publishing caps now removed.
Through Read and Publish agreements, the Library bundles subscription costs with open access publishing costs. This enables eligible University of Sydney corresponding authors to read subscription content and publish their research open access without paying the usual article processing charges (APCs), which can be a significant barrier to publishing, particularly for early career researchers or those without dedicated funding.
The new agreements with Elsevier, Wiley, Taylor & Francis, and Springer Nature substantially increase the range of journals in which University of Sydney researchers can publish open access, while also reducing uncertainty around availability by removing or easing publishing caps that previously limited uptake. This means more research can be shared openly, increasing its visibility, reach and impact.
Most of the Library’s Read and Publish agreements are negotiated through CAUL, alongside a small number of agreements licensed directly by the University. Together, these agreements form a key part of the Library’s ongoing commitment to supporting sustainable open access publishing models and maximising the value of investment in scholarly publishing.
The complete list of Read and Publish agreements, including eligibility criteria and included journals, is available on the Library website. Researchers are encouraged to check the details of each agreement before submitting, as eligibility requirements can vary by publisher and journal.
To support researchers in making the most of these agreements, the Library will host a webinar on accessing and using Read and Publish agreements at the University of Sydney. The session will provide an overview of open access publishing, explain how Read and Publish agreements work, outline eligibility and limitations, and demonstrate how to find and interpret agreement information.
