Participating in Wear it Purple Day and wearing purple demonstrates to LGBTQIA+ young people that they are celebrated and respected. Originally founded by students in response to global stories of teenagers taking their own lives due to bullying and harassment, Wear it Purple Day has become an international movement of love and support. This year’s theme is "Your Passion, Your Pride" is a celebration of LGBTQIA+ people openly and visibly achieving their dreams — in sport, art, science and more! A colourful artwork by Nicky Tsekouras celebrates Wear it Purple Day 2024.
The Library supports Wear it Purple Day, as we strive to foster a supportive, safe, empowering and inclusive environment for community. For Wear it Purple Day on 30 August, as well as the days leading up to it, we'll have a variety of activations around the Library, including:
- Purple carpet at the Fisher Library entrance
Our fabulous purple VIP carpet will return this year at the entrance of Fisher Library, acknowledging Wear it Purple Day, and welcoming and celebrating our LGBTQIA+ community.
- Purple info desks and Library merch
Our info desks in Fisher Library, Law Library, SciTech Library, Susan Wakil Health Building Library, and the Conservatorium of Music Library will be decorated in purple to celebrate the occassion. Visit one of these info desks to also pick up some Library Pride stickers.
- Wear it Purple Day event
This year, the Pride Network and Diversity and Inclusion Team have invited speakers from University’s LGBTQIA+ community to share how they use their passions to ally the wider LGBTQIA+ community and build pride. This event will be hosted online on 30 August, 11am-12pm. Book now.
