Honi Soit, the University of Sydney’s weekly student newspaper, has been published by the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) since 1929, providing a rich and informative source on the cultural, social, and University issues of the day. It is now produced by an elected editorial team and a select group of reporters sourced from the University's populace.
Honi Soit is an abbreviation of the Anglo-Norman "Honi soit qui mal y pense" ("Shame upon him who thinks evil of it") reflecting the purpose of its original publication, to counter mainstream press criticism of student activities on Commemoration Day. This was a traditional event held until the mid 1970’s, with parades and pranks occurring from the university grounds into the city in celebration of the university’s establishment.
