Rare Books & Special Collections

Supporting teaching and research at the University and beyond

COVID-19 The Rare Books and Special Collections (RRBSC) Reading Room is available by appointment

The Rare Books and Special Collections reading room has reopened to University Staff and students from 11am-3pm weekdays. Bookings need to be made via Library Search at least 2 days in advance.

Requests for digital copies of materials

We are currently experiencing a high volume of requests for scanning of items. Requests are assessed on a case by case basis and there are delays of up to 3 months. Priority is given to materials required for teaching purposes. Staff and students on campus are strongly encouraged to make a booking and use the self-scan facilities in the reading room.

A minimum pre-booking period of two business days is required for all Rare Books & Special Collections materials. Booking requests made less than two business days in advance of the required date will not be accepted. You will be notified by email to resubmit your booking request. Please read the Reading Room Terms of Use before making your first booking.


About our collections
  • Rare Books and Special Collections includes early printed books from Europe, Australia, America, and Asia. We also collect high-quality facsimiles, examples of fine printing and binding and modern limited editions. Included in our holdings are pre-2013 University of Sydney higher degree theses and University of Sydney publications. There are over 170,000 items in our collections.

Reproduction, display and publication of images
  • If you wish to reproduce any images of Rare Books and Special Collections material in publications or on the internet please contact Rare Books and Special Collections for permission. A reproduction fee may be charged.
    In all circumstances any reproductions must be credited to "Rare Books and Special Collections, the University of Sydney Library".
