Francis Willughby was the patron of the botanist John Ray and collaborated with him on a number of projects. They travelled abroad together to pursue their natural philosophical interests. Willughby was also involved in the first successful blood transfusion experiments on dogs in Oxford. Ray saw this posthumous work on ornithology through the press.
