Agreements
University-wide Read and Publish agreements (also described as “transformative agreements”) enable authors to publish their articles in selected open access journals immediately upon acceptance for publication, free of individual article processing charges (APCs).
We support selected Read and Publish agreements. This means that University staff and Higher Degree by Research Students can publish open access journal articles in over 13,000 journals without paying article processing charges (APCs).
To access these agreements, you must use your @sydney.edu.au email address and list “The University of Sydney” as your primary affiliation when submitting an article manuscript for publication.
University staff and Higher Degree by Research Students can publish open access journal articles in over 13,000 journals without Article Processing Charges (APCs).
The University of Sydney also has some direct agreement (non-CAUL) with publishers.
In 2024, publishers include:
* University of Sydney direct agreement (non-CAUL)
How do Read and Publish agreements work?
University of Sydney authors will not be asked to pay an APC for journals covered by the agreements.
‘Read & Publish’ agreements bundle institutional subscription costs to read and corresponding author costs to publish into one payment to the publisher. Some agreements have publishing caps, or a limit on the number of articles that can be published open access under an agreement. There still may be some page and colour charges.
Open Access via the publisher is one of several pathways available to you. You can also make your work open by depositing it to Sydney eScholarship.
The University of Sydney is a member of the CAUL consortium (Council of Australian University Librarians), which negotiates most Read and Publish agreements on behalf of the University Library and the sector. The agreements combine Article Processing Charges (“Publish”) with library subscriptions (“Read”) into a single, university-wide agreement for each publisher.
Which journal titles are included?
There are two title lists:
1. A CAUL title list is available for all CAUL Read and Publish Agreements. Please note:
the CAUL journal list is provided and maintained by CAUL and includes titles and publishers not covered by the University of Sydney agreements, and
each publisher agreement has different terms and conditions, included titles and caps (number of included articles per year). See the CAUL Read and Publish guide for further information on each publisher.
2. A University of Sydney title list for journals covered by direct, non-CAUL agreements.
Who is eligible?
All University staff and Higher Degree by Research Students are eligible to publish under the University’s Read and Publish Agreements. To access these agreements, corresponding authors must use their personal @sydney.edu.au email address and list “The University of Sydney” as their primary affiliation when submitting their article manuscript for publication.
