University-supported tools to help you manage your research data

This page provides information about a number of University-supported tools suitable for working with research data. These tools are supported by ICT or the Research Data team. Please see below or contact the Research Data team for more information.

Research Data Management Plan

A Research Data Management Plan (RDMP) documents how researchers plan to collect, store, secure and share their research data. Research data management planning is a requirement of the University’s Research Data Management Policy, 2014 and is outlined in detail in the Research Data Management Procedures, 2015. Good research data management practices reduce the risk of data loss, allow data sharing and can increase a researcher's profile through data citation.

An RDMP is required to request digital data storage on the Research Data Store and for access to Artemis High Performance Computing.

High Performance Computing (HPC)

High Performance Computing (HPC) involves the use of supercomputers, parallel computing and/or computer clusters for advanced computing tasks including modelling, data processing and analysis. The University’s HPC service is called Artemis.

The University provides researchers with fully-funded, on-demand access to Artemis to support high-quality research as part of our investment in improving research infrastructure.

For more information check out the Artemis user guide or visit Ask Sydney. Request access to Artemis by submitting an RDMP.

eNotebooks are a great online tool for all research areas. eNotebooks allow for easy collaboration with both internal and external researchers. An eNotebook can store your documents and data files, is easily integrated with Microsoft Office, is accessible via an app or browser, and has customisable widgets to make your research and data records more effective. All eNotebooks and their data are stored on servers within Australia.

REDCap is a secure web application for building and managing online surveys and databases, and is suitable for a broad range of research activity. It provides audit trails for tracking data manipulation and user activity, scheduling tools, ad hoc reporting, data validation and export functionality into formats such as CSV, SPSS, PDF and R.

REDCap is accessible from any device with an internet connection, so you can run it on mobile devices (iPads/tablets) as well as a laptops and personal computers. When you enter data into REDCap, it runs on the University of Sydney's servers, but it is displayed on your local monitor. It looks and feels as if it is running on your own computer, but it isn't. This provides increased security because files containing sensitive data never leave our data centre. You can import data into REDCap as well as export data from REDCap.
