Fines and fees

Overdue fines will be suspended from 18 Jan 2021

Find out more about the changes to fines and fees in 2021.

Before 18 Jan 2021:

You can still borrow with fines less than $30. Even better, as long as your fines are $29 or under in December, we’ll waive those fines and give you a fresh start for the next year.

We don't charge fines unless:

  • The item is more than 32 days overdue - If you’ve exceeded 4 renewals and still need the item, you can get in contact with us and we'll help
  • The item is from our 2 hour loan collection, and it's returned late
  • The item has been requested/recalled by another borrower.

Students who have outstanding fines or fees may be stopped from re-enrolling or graduating.

Fines and fees

  • Recalled items - $10/day
  • Overdue 2 hour items - $10/per hour
  • Replacement fees (if an item is lost or damaged) - $150

How to pay fines: What you need to know

  • You can pay with a credit or debit card by logging into My account
  • We accept Visa and Mastercard
  • We have a minimum payment of $10
  • If you want to pay off your fine in instalments, you’ll need to come to Fisher Library on level 3, where you can pay with EFTPOS, credit or debit.

How to appeal a fine

If you believe a fine is incorrect or unfair, or if you’re experiencing financial hardship you can appeal for the fine to be reduced or waived. We’ll let you know the outcome of your appeal within 7 working days.

How to appeal the outcome of your fine appeal

If you aren’t satisfied with the process that the Library used to decide your appeal and you wish to ask the University Librarian to review your appeal, please write a letter that includes your reasons for the original appeal to:

If you've returned an item, but it's still in My account

If you're sure that you returned an item, but it's still listed in your loans account:

  • Sometimes the system has a delay - If it's been less than an hour since you returned it, try checking your loans again in an hour or so
  • Double check at home and at work - Sometimes the item might have been moved by someone else
  • If you still can't find it, please let us know by filling out this form, and we'll investigate.

Replacing a lost or damaged item

  • If an item you return is damaged, you may be charged a replacement fee ($150)
  • An item is recorded as lost when you report that you have lost it, or if it is more than 32 days overdue
  • Before you purchase a replacement for a lost or damaged item, you need to contact us first. We don't accept replacement copies without written confirmation from the Library that you have contacted us and been advised on ordering the correct edition.
